So, you’ve got your first trip to the dentist coming up? Well, going to the dentist can actually be quite fun. Here’s what to expect on your first trip.
Getting comfortable
The dentists are very friendly. When you enter the dental surgery, the first thing you get to try out is the dental chair. It’s super fancy and has special buttons to make it go up and down! Once you’ve had a play, it’s important to lie back so the dentist can get a better view of your teeth. There’s a special light that’s really bright so the dentist can see all your teeth. But don’t worry, they give you cool sunglasses to wear!
A sneaky peak inside your mouth
The dentist may ask you to say ‘aaaahhhh’ as this helps you open your mouth wide! And with your mouth wide open, the dentist is able to count all your teeth - they use a teeny tiny mirror to see the teeth at the back of your mouth. You’ll be surprised at how many teeth are hiding back there! It can be quite difficult to speak when your mouth’s wide open. Which means there are plenty of giggles when you try to answer the dentist’s questions. The dentist checks to make sure your teeth are growing the correct way and they use a special tool to look for nasties like plaque and tartar.
The finishing touches
Sometimes the dentist will use a nice polishing tool to make your teeth shine – it tickles when they use it! Once they’ve finished looking at your teeth, they give you a special drink to help you rinse your mouth – you're not allowed to drink it though, you have to spit it out! The dentist may apply this thing called fluoride to your teeth to help make them super-strong! You won’t be able to eat or drink afterwards for 30 minutes to allow it to do its magic.
You're good to go!
Finally, they’ll show you the best way to brush your teeth at home. And that’s it. Now remember, it’s important to go back and visit the dentist every 6 months to help keep your teeth in top shape.
