In between trips to the dentist, it’s super important to take care of your teeth and gums – otherwise they can get really sore, and your teeth can even get holes in them. Eek! But we’re going to try to not let that happen, are we? We want to try and keep them nice and healthy.

How to brush like a pro

First you’ll need a manual or electric toothbrush. Both types can work just as well, so choose your favourite. Put a pea-size amount of toothpaste on your toothbrush. If you don’t know how big a pea is, it’s best to ask an adult. Then brush! Brush the front, and the back. Side to side. Up and down. Round and round. And spit! Oh, and don't forget to gently brush your gums. You should brush your teeth two times a day for two minutes each time. Brush once in the morning and once before bed to help avoid stinky breath and keep your teeth clean. Here’s an easy way to remember: 2+2 = a healthy smile for you. TOP TIP: Try brushing along to your favourite song or set a timer to count you down. That two minutes will fly by!

Note to parents: stock up on stickers and healthy treats to reward your kids for being brushing superstars.

Floss like a boss

If you're not flossing already, now's the perfect time to get in the habit. Flossing helps get rid of all the little bits of food and nasty germs that are too small to see - the ones hiding in the gaps between your teeth and gums. Aim to floss once a day. Ask an adult to help you with your flossing technique and get tips from the dentist next time you visit.

What you eat can be good (or bad) for teeth

We all know sugary things like sweets and fizzy drinks taste AMAZING. But too much sugar can harm your teeth by feeding the nasty bacteria. Instead, try to eat healthy snacks and treats like fresh fruit and vegetables. And even though it can be a bit boring sometimes, it’s important to drink plenty of water and milk throughout the day as this helps wash away the nasty bacteria and contains something called fluoride which protects your teeth.

Keep up the good work

That’s all there is to it. Keep up a healthy dental routine to help your smile shine bright for years to come!
